L’area dove oggi sorge l’aeroporto Costa D’Amalfi, infrastruttura su cui tutta la provincia di Salerno punta per rilanciare il turismo, fu scelta nel 1926 per la costruzione di un semplice campo d’aviazione, istituito con decreto da Italo Balbo. Già nel 1929 il XX stormo Aeroplani da Ricognizione, comandato dal Col. Pilota Mario Martucci fu dislocato a Montecorvino.
Nel 1939 si avviarono importanti lavori di ampliamento affinché poste ospitare una scuola per allievi sottufficiale e nel 1943 l’area ricadde nel territorio comunale di Pontecagnano
La presenza del campo d’aviazione influenzò le strategie dei comandi Alleati nel 1943, e la sua conquista divenne uno degli obiettivi principali delle operazioni militari. Altrettanto fu considerato strategico dai tedeschi che, l’8 settembre dello stesso anno, ne presero possesso.
Dopo alcune modifiche dell’assetto amministrativo, oggi la aerostazione ricade nel comune di Bellizzi anche se l’area si estende anche oltre toccando comuni limitrofi. ENGLISH VERSION : MONTECORVINO AIRPORT , TODAY CALLED “COSTA D’AMALFI”
The area where the Costa D’Amalfi Airport now stands—an infrastructure the entire province of Salerno relies on to boost tourism—was originally chosen in 1926 for the construction of a simple airfield, established by decree of Italo Balbo. As early as 1929, the 20th Reconnaissance Aircraft Wing, commanded by Colonel Pilot Mario Martucci, was stationed in Montecorvino.
In 1939, major expansion works began to accommodate a training school for non-commissioned officer cadets, and in 1943, the area officially became part of the municipality of Pontecagnano.
The presence of the airfield influenced Allied command strategies in 1943, and its capture became one of the primary objectives of military operations. It was considered equally strategic by the Germans, who took control of it on September 8 of the same year.
After some changes in the administrative structure, today the airport is part of the municipality of Bellizzi.
