Il biennio 1943-1944 ha rappresentato una svolta cruciale nella storia del territorio salernitano, segnato dall’Operazione Avalanche. Un’operazione militare che non solo ha cambiato il corso degli eventi bellici, ma ha anche avuto un impatto profondo sulle sorti nazionali ed europee.

La mostra “Lands of Avalanche: on the way to democracy” è un tributo a quei momenti storici. Essa esplora tre aspetti fondamentali: l’impatto territoriale dell’operazione bellica, il coinvolgimento dei comuni salernitani in quegli eventi, e le ripercussioni che essi ebbero sulla vita quotidiana. Un racconto che non si limita alla guerra, ma si espande fino alla nascita del primo governo di coalizione antifascista a Salerno e all’ospitalità che la città di Cava de’ Tirreni offrì al governo greco in esilio.

In questo anno, in cui ricordiamo l’80° anniversario dell’insediamento dei governi italiano e greco, la mostra intende restituire voce a quei luoghi, a quelle vicende, che, per quanto brevi e intensi, furono al centro di un dramma mondiale e della speranza di un nuovo inizio.

“Lands of Avalanche” è il frutto di un progetto dell’Associazione Culturale Mu.Bat – Museo di Battipaglia – ed è promosso nell’ambito del progetto CERV European Remembrance “Avalanche”. È anche una tappa fondamentale nella candidatura dei comuni di Battipaglia, Eboli, Montecorvino Pugliano, Montecorvino Rovella, Bellizzi, Olevano sul Tusciano e Salerno all’European Heritage Label 2025, in occasione della commemorazione dello sbarco di Salerno nel 1943.

Con questa esposizione online, rendiamo omaggio alla memoria collettiva, cercando di trasmettere alle nuove generazioni l’importanza di quei momenti storici che hanno plasmato il nostro presente e che continuano a vivere nei luoghi e nelle storie che raccontiamo.

The years 1943-1944 marked a pivotal turning point in the history of the Salerno area, shaped by Operation Avalanche. This military operation not only changed the course of the war but also had a profound impact on national and European history.

The exhibition “Lands of Avalanche: on the way to democracy” is a tribute to those historic moments. It explores three fundamental aspects: the territorial impact of the military operation, the involvement of Salerno’s municipalities in these events, and the repercussions they had on daily life. The narrative goes beyond the war, expanding to the birth of the first antifascist coalition government in Salerno and the hospitality that the city of Cava de’ Tirreni offered to the exiled Greek government.

In this year, when we commemorate the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the Italian and Greek governments, the exhibition aims to give voice to those places and stories that, despite being brief and intense, were at the center of a global drama and the hope for a new beginning.

“Lands of Avalanche” is the result of a project by the Mu.Bat Cultural Association – Museum of Battipaglia – and is promoted within the CERV European Remembrance “Avalanche” project. It is also a key stage in the candidacy of the municipalities of Battipaglia, Eboli, Montecorvino Pugliano, Montecorvino Rovella, Bellizzi, Olevano sul Tusciano, and Salerno for the European Heritage Label 2025, in commemoration of the 1943 Salerno landings.

With this online exhibition, we pay tribute to collective memory, aiming to convey to new generations the importance of those historical moments that shaped our present and continue to live in the places and stories we tell.
