Siamo nei giorni più cruenti e difficili dell’operazione Avalanche per gli Alleati, che vedeva il coinvolgimento della 3ª divisione di fanteria, fondamentale per contrastare i nemici tedeschi. La fanteria era composta da tre reggimenti: il settimo, il quindicesimo e il trentesimo. Fu il generale Mark Clark a richiedere rinforzi, ma il 30° fanteria sbarcò solo dopo gli altri due reggimenti, quando i tedeschi si erano ritirati dalla difesa della costa e la testa di ponte era stata messa in sicurezza. Il generale decise quindi di suddividere le divisioni di rinforzo, dirigendo il Corpo di Armata Americana e la terza divisione verso il fianco destro dell’avanzata, in direzione delle montagne, mentre la divisione di rinforzo britannica procedeva lungo la costa, verso Napoli. Il 30° fanteria invece lasciò Battipaglia e si diresse verso la città montana di Acerno.
Fu proprio il paesaggio montuoso a rendere difficile la conquista di Acerno da parte del 30° fanteria, che impiegò due giorni per liberarla dai tedeschi. Durante queste battaglie è doveroso ricordare l’impresa coraggiosa di Audie Murphy, che, con l’aiuto del suo migliore amico Lattie Tipton, soldato di prima classe (Pfc), contribuì a combattere i soldati tedeschi, come riportato dal sito progettoavalanche.it, che racconta l’impresa di Murphy e la sua importanza.

We are in the bloodiest and most difficult days of Operation Avalanche for the Allies, which saw the involvement of the 3rd Infantry Division, crucial to counter the German enemies. The infantry consisted of three regiments: the seventh, fifteenth and thirtieth. General Mark Clark called for reinforcements, but the 30th Infantry landed only after the other two regiments had withdrawn from the coast and the bridgehead was secured. The general then decided to divide the reinforcement divisions, directing the American Army Corps and the third division towards the right flank of the advance, in the direction of the mountains, while the British reinforcement division proceeded along the coast, towards Naples. The 30th Infantry left Battipaglia and headed for the mountain town of Acerno.
It was precisely the mountainous landscape that made it difficult for the 30th Infantry to conquer Acerno, which took two days to liberate from the Germans. During these battles it is worth remembering the brave feat of Audie Murphy, who, with the help of his best friend Lattie Tipton, soldier first class (Pfc), helped to fight the German soldiers, as reported by the site progettoavalanche.it, which tells the story of Murphy’s feat and its importance.
Corporal Murphy and his team specialized in operations in mountainous territory, and arrived at a bridge, probably during an exploration operation. The bridge had been blown up by German soldiers and a German post was identified among the ruins. It was Murphy who decided that the station should be demolished. His comrades did not agree, suggesting to wait for reinforcements, but Audie decided to act anyway, fearing that the Germans could move at any moment. Only his friend Lattie Tipton offered to accompany him, although Murphy was not in favor of this decision. He did not want anything to happen to his best friend, whom he considered particularly brave and reckless.
Murphy and Tipton moved cautiously through a path among the weeds to reach the stream Isca della Serra. When they approached the enemy position, they were discovered and attacked by the Germans. During the fight, as described in the memoir “To Hell and Back”, Murphy thought of Tipton’s daughter, Claudean, and remembered her photos and letters. He positioned himself to cover Tipton, who hit the enemy position with his machine gun. During the clash, Murphy killed a German soldier emerging from a hole. Meanwhile, Tipton threw grenades destroying other holes. Despite Murphy’s warnings, Tipton threw a grenade into an opposite hole, killing five German soldiers and probably saving Murphy’s life.
