La mostra “8th Army and Salerno” è dedicata alla storia dell’Operazione Avalanche, dalla preparazione in Africa al rischio di fallimento e fino alla liberazione di Roma, vista dalla prospettiva dell’Ottava Armata Britannica. Nasce dalla volontà dell’associazione Mubat di contribuire a svelare gli aspetti poco noti degli eventi legati allo sbarco alleato a Salerno nel 1943.
Ciò è probabilmente dovuto a un approccio diverso da parte della società civile riguardo l’interpretazione degli eventi che seguirono lo sbarco, con la convinzione, di una larga parte della popolazione, che fosse l’effetto diretto di un “tradimento”.
Lo sbarco del 1943 soffre della percezione errata che, a differenza della guerra di Liberazione nell’Italia centrale e settentrionale, la partecipazione degli italiani nella lotta fosse scarsa, sottovalutando così le stragi naziste al Sud, le retate e, soprattutto, l’insurrezione popolare a Napoli.
Attraverso fotografie di reperti storici, testimonianze e immagini d’epoca, l’esposizione offre una narrazione che unisce i fatti militari e le vicende personali, mettendo in luce l’impatto della guerra sulle comunità locali e sulla vita quotidiana. Questo percorso non solo commemora gli eventi, ma celebra anche la determinazione e il sacrificio dei soldati e dei civili che vissero quei giorni, rappresentando un tributo alla memoria e alla speranza di un futuro di pace.

The exhibition “8th Army and Salerno” is dedicated to the history of Operation Avalanche, from its preparation in Africa to the risk of failure and the eventual liberation of Rome, seen from the perspective of the British Eighth Army. It was created by the Mubat association with the aim of shedding light on the lesser-known aspects of the events related to the Allied landings in Salerno in 1943.
This is likely due to a different approach by civil society in interpreting the events that followed the landing, with a widespread belief among much of the population that it was the direct result of a “betrayal.”
The 1943 landing suffers from a misconception that, unlike the Liberation War in central and northern Italy, the participation of Italians in the struggle was minimal, thus underestimating the Nazi massacres in the South, the roundups, and, most importantly, the popular uprising in Naples.
Through photographs of historical artifacts, testimonies, and period images, the exhibition provides a narrative that combines military events and personal stories, highlighting the impact of the war on local communities and daily life. This journey not only commemorates the events but also celebrates the determination and sacrifice of the soldiers and civilians who lived through those days, serving as a tribute to memory and the hope for a peaceful future.

L’exposition « 8th Army and Salerno » est consacrée à l’histoire de l’opération Avalanche, de sa préparation en Afrique au risque d’échec, jusqu’à la libération de Rome, vue sous l’angle de la Huitième Armée britannique. Elle est née de la volonté de l’association Mubat de contribuer à dévoiler les aspects méconnus des événements liés au débarquement allié à Salerne en 1943.
Cela s’explique probablement par une approche différente de la société civile quant à l’interprétation des événements qui ont suivi le débarquement, une grande partie de la population étant convaincue qu’il s’agissait de la conséquence directe d’une “trahison”.
Le débarquement de 1943 souffre de la perception erronée selon laquelle, contrairement à la guerre de Libération dans le centre et le nord de l’Italie, la participation des Italiens à la lutte aurait été faible, sous-estimant ainsi les massacres nazis dans le Sud, les rafles et, surtout, l’insurrection populaire de Naples.
À travers des photographies d’objets historiques, des témoignages et des images d’époque, l’exposition propose un récit qui mêle les faits militaires aux histoires personnelles, mettant en lumière l’impact de la guerre sur les communautés locales et sur la vie quotidienne. Ce parcours ne se contente pas de commémorer les événements ; il célèbre également la détermination et le sacrifice des soldats et des civils qui ont vécu ces journées, constituant un véritable hommage à la mémoire et à l’espoir d’un avenir pacifique.
