The “Battle of Salerno” was the air-naval operation in the Mediterranean that, more than any other, changed the course of World War II across Europe.
The digital museum aims to create a catalogue of resources available online and traces still present among the artistic and environmental beauties in the area.
L'8 settembre 1943, l'Italia annunciò l'armistizio con gli Alleati, ma il 9 settembre iniziò lo Sbarco di Salerno ("Avalanche"), un'importante operazione alleata per aprire un nuovo fronte. La battaglia fu dura e durò settimane, ma si concluse con la liberazione di Napoli il 1° ottobre, lasciando il territorio salernitano devastato.
On September 8, 1943, Italy announced the armistice with the Allies, but on September 9, the Salerno Landing ("Avalanche") began—an important Allied operation to open a new front. The battle was fierce and lasted for weeks, ultimately leading to the liberation of Naples on October 1. However, the Salerno area was left devastated.
Da Maiori al Cilento il fronte delle operazioni interessò decine di città, da Battipaglia a Paestum, da Salerno ad Ariano Irpino. Oggi le memorie di quei giorni sono custodite negli Stati Uniti, in Canada in Australia e oltre. Il Museo digitale abbraccia virtualmente tutti questi patrimoni.
From Maiori to Cilento, the operational front affected dozens of cities, from Battipaglia to Paestum, from Salerno to Ariano Irpino. Today, the memories of those days are preserved in the United States, Canada, Australia, and beyond. The digital museum virtually embraces all these heritage sites.
Nel ricordare l’80º anniversario dell’insediamento dei governi italiano e greco nel 1944- questa mostra vuole essere un tributo alla memoria collettiva, restituendo voce ai luoghi e alle vicende che, anche per brevi istanti, furono al centro di un dramma mondiale e della speranza di un nuovo inizio.
In remembering the 80th anniversary of the installation of the Italian and Greek governments in 1944, this exhibition is intended to be a tribute to collective memory, giving voice to places and events that, even for brief moments, were at the centre of a world drama and hope for a new beginning.
